💬 "They're interested… but is it too early to reach out?"

Every seller has frozen on this one. You spot the signals — a profile view, a like, an intent bump — but you're not sure if it's a real green light or you'd be jumping the gun. 🚦

So let's crowdsource it 👇

What's YOUR green light to send that first message? 👀 They viewed your profile 👍 They engaged with your (or your company's) content 📈 Their account's Buyer Intent is climbing 🔄 A recent job change …or something else entirely?

Comment your #1 "now's the time" trigger — genuinely curious what this community trusts most.

Haha! Just wanted to understand the group's perspective, if anyone is willing to share their thoughts.

For me, the strongest trigger is a combination of signals—rising Buyer Intent, recent engagement with my content, and a job change. That combination usually means the timing is right for a personalized, value-first conversation rather than a cold pitch. @Abesh.Sengupta

@Sinchu Raju

That's a great combination of signals. I especially like that you highlighted the importance of looking at multiple indicators rather than relying on just one.

When buyer intent, engagement, and a job change align, it creates the perfect opportunity for a timely and relevant conversation. That's exactly where Sales Navigator helps shift outreach from being reactive to being truly consultative. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

@Abesh.

Since my primary focus is on small business owners, my "green light" is seeing a small business owenr, an entrepreneur, a freelancer, or startup founder add the #OpenToWork frame to their profile picture. It’s a powerful signal that suggests one of the following issues: they might not fully understand the purpose of the frame, or they are struggling to grow their business and are signaling a need for new opportunities or external support and in some cases have given up and are now actively searching the job market.

That vulnerability is my cue to reach out with a value-driven message. I start by simply asking why they added the frame to understand their specific situation. Regardless of their answer, my goal is to offer help: if they are truly ready to move on, I offer support in their job search, which builds significant goodwill and long-term referral potential.

If they are actually just hitting a rough patch, that initial question opens a discovery process where I can help them identify leaks in their business and build a roadmap to profitability, potentially helping them avoid the need to find a new job entirely.

Beyond the #OpenToWork signal, I also look for announcements about new products or services. Another strong indicator is a change in a profile suggesting a pivot, such as launching a new venture or closing a previous one.

When a business owner relaunches, it often signals that their previous attempt hit a roadblock they’re eager to avoid repeating. In these cases, I aim to position myself as an advocate by sharing helpful, external resources or lead magnets that have proven valuable to my network. By providing genuine support without an immediate pitch, I build trust during a pivotal transition.

@Alexandre Damiani, as an entrepreneur myself, I target small business owners because I’ve walked that path and truly understand the challenges they face. You’re spot on; what I’ve shared is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. When I started my first company, I had zero budget to hire someone to help me market my business. I had to learn it all myself, and the mind twisting that went into it after quitting my job cold turkey was a valuable lesson and it is a book of it’s own too long to write here.

A major advantage is to meet them where they are is the opportunity to connect directly with their network, especially by showing up at the same in-person events they attend.

Imagine landing one of their connections as a client. That connection will eventually tell your prospect that they started working with you and what the outcome was. Basically, their network becomes your path back into a conversation that went cold.

Last night was a perfect example of how this works. There was a small business owner who I had been trying to do business with for the past 3 years because I really wanted to help him. Well, turns out he got hired to be a part of the event. Upon my arrival, I went over to say hi (not to try to sell him anything, only to say hi).

Guess what happened? No need to guess. Here is what happened. He said hi and immediately started by saying he needed my help and wanted to start that conversation again. He started closing himself and asked about pricing (basically, he was helping me close him on the spot).

To make a long story short, I told him that we were both at the same event, and our number one goal was to make connections regardless of where that path with that new connection goes.

When three other contacts I hadn't seen in a long time approached us, I introduced them to my prospect, spoke highly of his work, and highlighted the value he could provide them. By focusing on building his network in that moment, I created a much stronger, more authentic foundation for our professional relationship - unscripted - me just being me.

And guess what happened next? No need to guess; I am going to tell you. He told me to follow up with him after the event so we can schedule some time this coming week to finalize the details and get things moving forward. He did the closing for me. I just had to be there.

When I connect with prospects, as you described, several things happen. A sales conversation starts, a power partner relationship starts, and sometimes a friendship arises from those conversations. And sometimes it’s just banter.

Because I organize in-person and online networking events or help organize and promote someone else's event, I invite them to join me (now bringing them into my circle). Some still ghost me, and when they do, it’s okay because they become a human compass for me to prospect in their world, just like those who turn down my business.

When you prospect in the world, you’re strategically reopening the door. They may still never do business with me, but they are still a valuable asset of potential leads. And some day, when one of their connections tells them how I help them either as a customer, through an intro, etc., they may become a customer.

A dead lead at that moment is just that. There are a ton of businesses waiting to say YES; you have to go from unknown to known, and the rest will work itself out.

The point: I do what you do, I just didn’t mention it in this article. I offered this insight because of conversations I’ve had with other who have shared stories of how a hot lead went into the witness protection program. When I offer this perspective in the conversation, most say something like, “Wow, I never thought of that.”

@Damien-XocialGong  what stood out to me wasn't the #OpenToWork signal itself—it was your mindset of treating it as the start of a conversation rather than an opportunity to pitch.

Your story also reinforces something many professionals overlook: sometimes the best way to earn trust isn't by talking about your own solution, but by helping someone expand their network first. Those moments create credibility that no sales script can replicate.

It really shows that consistency, genuine support, and simply being present often outperform perfectly timed outreach.
