Hello Community members,

Sellers perform searches on Sales Navigator several times a day, even when you’re no longer doing account research or the initial prospecting for your green accounts. However, do you know the multiple ways you can perform smarter and more efficient searches than simply typing in keywords in the search bar? In today’s post, we will explore the four different ways Search (the search bar) can be utilized in Sales Navigator. But before we dive in, let’s take a look at why it is so crucial to set your Sales Preferences if you haven’t yet!

Setting Up and Changing Your Sales Preferences

Your sales preferences are essentially guidelines for Sales Navigator to know how to narrow down search results and pull the most relevant information from LinkedIn.com to you. The categories you can filter are:

  • Geographies – You can now select up from within 1mi to within 100mi radius from a postal code or region.
  • Industry
  • Company size
  • Function
  • Seniority level – The “Senior” entry here means that a person has been in the workforce (not their current company) for at least 5 years.

For each category, you can select as many filters as you like – you can also leave nothing checked in a category if you wish to see a broader selection of search results. Once you’re done selecting filters in each category, simply click “Done” at the bottom of that column to save your preferences.

* Note: In case you are wondering about the limitations of the search apparatus, here are some quick guidelines regarding Searches in Sales Navigator:

  • 100-mile maximum search radius from a postal code
  • 2,500 maximum profiles shown per search
  • Unlimited number of searches

THE FOUR METHODS TO PERFORM SEARCH

1. Advanced Search

The first more efficient way to search is Advanced Search, or search by filters. As you see in the screenshot below, there is a list of filters you can select and customize from underneath “Keywords.”

  • You can select filters within each category by clicking on each category directly in the left panel (boxed in blue above) or select “Lead filters” (boxed in pink above)* to open up a pop-up panel that would show the same categories. (See screenshot below)
  • When you open up the pop-up panel, you will see the toggle option to “Apply your sales preferences” (boxed in green above). This should give you another reason to set up your sales preferences and update them whenever possible, as applying your sales preferences will save you time every time you start a new filtered search.
  • After your preferences have been populated into some categories (i.e. Geography, Industry, Function), you can add more specific filters to other categories (i.e. Title, Connection Relationship, Years at current company) if you wish.
  • As you select more filters, the number of results shown at the top right should decrease – and you want this because this means Sales Navigator is giving you a more refined search that has been identified for your criteria rather than a general, broad search.

* Note: These screenshots show the Advanced Search for Leads, but the same thing can be performed for an Accounts. Instead of selecting “Lead filters” at the top right, select “Account filters” instead.

2. Saved Searches

Another great way to search is going through your Saved Searches. They are accessible at the top of the navigation bar (boxed in pink below), and clicking into it will let you select “Saved lead searches” or “Saved account searches” (boxed in green below).

*Pro-tip: Check out this page for a quick reminder on how to save searches. Remember that you can save searches in both Leads and Accounts and choose how frequently you want to receive alerts! You can save up to 15 searches and receive up to 15 saved alerts per week.

From any of your saved search, you can also edit the filters in different categories on the left panel. Searching from a saved search allows you to start from a previous list you built rather than from scratch to save you some time.

* Note: This is different from “Saved Custom Lists,” which we will cover in another post later this week.

3. Boolean Search

The third smarter way to searching is using Boolean logic or modifiers within the Keywords you type in the search bar. Boolean search helps you narrow down OR expand your keywords searches to find results more closely related to what you are looking for. The modifiers you can use are AND, OR, NOT, and quotes and parenthesis.

For more information on how you can use other modifiers (AND, OR, NOT) in your Boolean search, check out this guide here. Additionally, below are visuals on what each modifier means in Boolean search/logic:

4. Search Exclusions

Lastly, we have the Search Exclusion feature, which came directly from the Ideas portal in Community based on many members’ feedback! This is an example that we are listening to you and will do our best to provide the best user experience, so keep those ideas coming. 😊

Search exclusion is an additional layer of selectivity in your Advanced Search (search by filters) page. This unique function allows you to include specific filters as well as to exclude specific ones you don’t want. The selected filters are shown as blue bubbles as usual, while excluded ones are shown as red bubbles. The seven categories that support search exclusion are:

  • Company – Leads only
  • Geography – both Leads and Accounts
  • Seniority level – Leads only
  • Title – Leads only
  • Function – Leads only
  • Industry – both Leads and Accounts
  • School – Leads only

To exclude a filter, all you need to do is hover over one in one of the seven supported categories and click the “block” icon (boxed in red below). After you exclude it, it should show up in red bubbles below (i.e. Entrepreneurship and Human Resources).

Final Thoughts

That wraps up the four different ways you can perform smarter and faster searches in Sales Navigator! I would like to know if there’s a certain method you utilize the most to search or which you’ve found to be most useful. What are some of your best practices around each method and are there any tips you can share with other members of the Community?

Happy searching, and I look forward to hearing your feedback!

Excellent article thank you Eva @Eva Chen for sharing - exceptional

Thanks so much, @Chris B! Glad you found it helpful 😊

Is there a method that stands out to you the most or personally utilize more than others?

😀

Really like the function to search and engage with C-Suite connections, truly understand their key challenges and how might depth and breadth of 3M help demonstrate value if that makes sense @Eva Chen @Nadia Vieira Additionally market segment, Sales Navigator continues to be a great help, go to first port of call for this new Marine segment i am developing - search and find new company's, contacts and leverage in-mail to reach out and i think combining with Microsoft Teams to help move the process at pace by connecting and aiming to host a video, virtual conference call especially more so whilst we're in unchartered waters. Wishing you all a great weekend, stay safe, kindest regards Chris. @Jon Page

Thank you for the awesome feedback, @Chris B!

I'm delighted to hear that Sales Navigator continues to be a great tool in your daily (and perhaps new?) activities in today's unique climate and environment regionally and globally - uncharted waters for sure! Great to hear that you're able to search and engage with C-Suite leads and connections — it seems like the advanced search filters are proving to be very practical and valuable here. I also love how you are leveraging InMails to establish a connection and further build that relationship! 😊

I did have a good weekend. Thank you again and have a good week ahead!

Thanks for sharing, very useful 😊

Hi @Lionel L,

Thank you so much and welcome to the Sales Navigator Community! I am so glad to hear you found this helpful! Is there one particular way of Search you are eager to try? Or perhaps found one that you know will be using a lot? 😊

Looking forward to hearing more from you in the future!

Will post full question on community, but just wanted to say that the current method of searching in a box that is not a picklist, like a last name, is rather clunky:

Click on All filters, Then Leads, and the full set of filters in a floating box appears

i. To add a free text search term, such as Brian in surname: Click First Name box

ii. +Add a first name changes to Add a first name

iii. Click it again – Cursor appears

iv. Type in name: Brian appears

v.    Press Enter to fix Brian in box

vi.    Repeat for other boxes

vii. Click Search

NB1; If you DON’T click the second click in the name box, you can be typing away and NOTHING happens, no ping, no warning. Really bad for non-touch typers like me

NB2; If you type in Brian and then click another filter, Brian disappears, filter not entered! It needs Return to confirm. What is really odd, though, is that if you do realise your mistake and go back and click on First Name filter, Brian is there just hiding out, waiting patiently for the return!

So to search for just surname Brian from the home screen takes 4 clicks, type Brian and return, then final click to get results.

What is then very odd, the list of leads page now has the last name filter filled with Brian!

Hi @Max L,

Thank you for the feedback! I have just addressed it on your full post/question here.

Please let me know on that thread if you have more questions. 🙂

Thank you,

Eva C.

Question : on the leads filters.

What exactly does " Posted content Keywords" and also how to efficiently use it.

Hi @Lionel L,

Thank you for the question! Another Community member asked about this filter in Search recently as well, and I've answered him here. Remember that Sales Navigator will pull only keywords from published articles (versus a regular update on LinkedIn). Additionally, from when I tried it myself, it seems like you can enter only one keyword at a time and Boolean search is not supported.

Hope this helps and please let me know if you have further questions!

Thank you,

Eva C.

What I like the most about advanced search in Sales Navigator is the Title field. I think many people don't realize how powerful it is! You can use Boolean logic to make sure you are searching for EXACT titles. Also the ability to exclude specific titles is a lifesaver.

For example, I remember trying to search for sales folks at specific companies, but kept having consultants and coaches show up. Being able to exclude the titles "coach" AND "consultant" were lifesavers.

Another part of advanced search that I think is underutilized is the Company title search field. You can search exact company names, but you can also search broad terms. For example, if you want to search for Dermatology companies you can search the word "Dermatology" and get some great results.

Cheers!

Thank you for sharing your favorite Advanced Search feature, @Chris C! 👏🏼

The 'Title' and 'Company' filters may be overlooked because they are common, but being able to use both Boolean logic and exclude entries of your choice in those fields certainly make them more useful, no? I'm glad to hear you've found success with Boolean modifiers and the Search Exclusion feature!

Finally, that is such a great tip for broader Search results for the 'Company' filter. I am sure this will help those who may not know which exact Accounts are in a specific location they are searching for.

Looking forward to hearing your future insights.

Cheers!

Eva C.

An absolute winner for me and the Philips Sales team is the filter "Custom Lists".

By creating Account Lists first with our Sales Reps 1:1, it's sooooo easy to now find the fe the "vascular surgeons" ONLY at their accounts, the Cardiologists ONLY at their accounts, the CXO's in ONLY their accounts; it's proven so helpful.

What would be great if we can also filter in the feed on specific account/lead lists; that would be a great new feature for the feed. I'll write it up in ideas.

I love the seniority criteria. It makes it so much easier to make sure we're finding and targeting the right people at any given company

Love the call out of the 'Custom List' filter, @Alex B! I'm glad to hear this feature has been useful to your team, especially since you can include or exclude a Lead or Account List from the search criteria.

That's a great idea for filtering specific Account and Lead Lists on the feed as well. I see you've already submitted the idea, so thank you for doing so! 😊

Another great filter, @Liam Q! Adding this layer of filter definitely helps narrow down the results at a specific company or across all your search criteria. The great thing about this filter is that you can also exclude one or multiple titles from the criteria.
