When working on a goal, the number one “secret” you find in every blog post, book, or newsletter of the best mentors is building the right habits. I said “secret” because it’s not really a secret.

Habits are automated actions; you don’t need to muster up too much energy each time because they are just done without extra thinking. It requires practice, like learning a route to a new office or using a new tool.

In a recent Community Roundtable conversation, What Top Performers Do Differently, our members also stressed that it’s always about having the habits that drive you towards your goals.

I’m turning to you now to hear what is your one daily habit that you

  • already mastered, or

  • you’d like to build in to your day-to-day

and it set you up for success. Please share with your peers in a comment below.

Plan your next day and the end of the current one. If you have no plan for the day, you’re unlikely to be effective. If you think you’ll set the plan at the start of the day, beware of the urgent pop-up issue that will come up and steal away your time to plan. The end of my work day is the best time to plan the next day. It means the plan will already be there when I start working, and it’s a great way to tie a bow on the current work day. Once I have my plan for tomorrow, it’s time to shut down and focus on myself and my family.

This is gold @Dustinlevy! Thanks for sharing with us.

I heard the same advice with one more step: Have a piece of paper, fold it in 3, and add the 3 most important tasks you need to accomplish. It will also help to keep your focus and strategically plan to achieve your set goals. It was also recommended, to fold the paper in order of importance, so that way you can make sure to start with the most crucial one.

I also like that by folding the paper, you don’t get to see all the list of task, only the one you’re working on the moment!

Do you also create your list by reference? In like manner, do you do the same on Fridays for the week ahead?
